Operational developments
As from 1 January 2013, AD “Elektrani na Makedonija” commenced with the distribution of heating energy through its subsidiary “Energetika” for consumers on the entire territory of the Skopje settlement of Autokomanda. For that purpose, the Company constructed the 2km-long regional heating pipeline for the settlement of Autokomanda. This is an investment of 1.7 million Euros, realized at the request of the citizens and the local self-government, in cooperation with the City of Skopje. With this new investment, additional 1,854 households in 70 residential buildings were connected to the network of ELEM Energetika, along with kindergartens, schools, sports and shopping facilities.
In 2013, we modernized the boiler system at TE “Bitola 2”. The 88.5 million worth project included complete replacement of the coal conduit, supply of coal, supply of air, replacement of the biggest portion of the pipeline, reduction of the level of harmful emissions, as well as a series of other undertakings in all three thermal blocks at REK “Bitola”. Following the completion of the project – planned to be finished by October 2015 – AD ELEM will become compatible in terms of the emission of nitrate oxides and will thus comply with the strictest European directives on environment protection.
ELEM invested 3.5 million Euros in geological and geotechnical explorations and inspections of the coal deposit Zhivojno. The explorations were finished in March 2013, and the completion of the studies of the ore reserves and the revision of such studies completes the process of further explorations in Zhivojno as a location of a new coal mine, necessary for the continuation of the existence and operation of REK “Bitola”. The estimates are that AD ELEM will invest about 103.5 million Euros in this mine, with the implementation to start following the completion of the main mining project. т.
The second stage of revitalization of AD ELEM’s hydro-power electricity plants began in February 2013, to replace the obsolete and worn out hydro-mechanical, machine and electrical equipment. We also intervened in the construction structure of the hydro power plants and their accompanying facilities. As part of the implementation of the project, we installed additional equipment, especially related to the automation of the electricity production process, as well as additional equipment for auscultation and observation of the situation, stability and safety of the dams and their accessory facilities. The 36.6 million Euros worth project, which was officially completed in July 2014, allowed for continuation of the existence and work of the existing hydro power plants and the construction facilities included in the system, as well as for increased safety and capacity, increased installed capacity of 18.31 MW and additional annual production of approximately 50 GWh of electricity.
AD ELEM is intensively working on the project of providing central heating for the municipalities of Bitola, Novaci and Mogila. To that goal, the turbines of the two thermal blocks at REK “Bitola” were reconstructed in 2011 and 2012; this was an undertaking amounting to a total of 4 million Euros. The modernization of the turbine block 3 allowed for full and regulated recovery of steam by installing outer structures on the new steam channeling pipelines between the high- and low-pressure cylinders; the same project was also implemented in TPP “Bitola” 2.
The development of the project documentation is underway, following the completion of which AD ELEM will publish an international call for bids for contractor of the heating network. In line with the dynamics of the work, the project documentation will be completed in 2014, to be followed by a procedure for selection of a contractor for the construction of the heating network.
The foundations of “Bogdanci”, the first ever park of wind power plants in Macedonia, were laid down in May 2013. Using wind as thrust, we will generate clean electricity from a renewable source. The project is expected to start functioning in the middle of 2014.
In the course of the year, we completed the road infrastructure, connected a transmission line to it, finished the command facility and a 20/220 KW power transformer. We also prepared the foundations of the specific location at which the planned windmills are to be erected. In addition, we expanded the power transformer “Valandovo”, to connect the park to the electricity system. The KfW bank provided 47.9 million Euros for this 55.5 million Euro project, and the remaining 7.6 million Euros are AD ELEM’s own funds. In the first stage, the “Bogdanci” wind park will have 16 windmills with a capacity of 36.8 MWh and an annual production of 100 GWh of wind energy. It will supply energy to 15,000 households or 60,000 citizens.
AD “Elektrani na Makedonija” presented itself for a third time with its own stand at the largest European energy fair “Power Gen“, which was held on 4-6 June in Vienna, Austria. Our company was recognizable at the Vienna energy fair for its renewable sources of energy. A team of experts of ELEM presented the potential and energy opportunities of the Republic of Macedonia in front of foreign partners and investors.
At the fair, we presented the already completed projects or the ones in the case of which preparatory activities have already begun, such as the “Bogdanci” wind park, the “Boshkov Most” power plant, and the “Lukovo Pole” dam. 3-D animations were used to also present the developmental energy projects for “Vardar Valley” and the hydro-system of power plants “Chebren” and “Galishte”.
This manifestation is of great significance not only for ELEM, but also for the Republic of Macedonia, as it allows for the establishment of contacts with all companies in this field.
The fair, which hosts companies from all continents, has been for over a decade a place of gathering of all relevant, i.e. significant energy producers, as well as companies producing equipment and resources in the field of energy. This was the third time that AD ELEM participated in the “Power Gen Europe“ fair, with its stand in the section for promotion of renewable sources of energy. Two years ago in Milano and last year in Cologne, the stand of the only Macedonian company to have ever presented itself thus far on the largest energy fairs was visited by several thousand people and communication with the largest companies was established.
This year, AD ELEM, the Faculty of Mechanics and the Faculty of Natural and Technical Sciences from Shtip signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and an agreement on delivery of practical classes. The main areas foreseen in the Memorandum of Cooperation include: work on development and research projects, work on applicable projects and consultation activities, with a special emphasis on educational activities.
In our international cooperation, a special focus will be placed on the development of educational activities that are to be implemented through continuous education of engineers and technicians by providing scholarships for students and postgraduates and delivery of practical classes for them. Attention will be paid to the recommendations for employing students who have graduated from such educational institutions at the request of ELEM, and lectures, seminars, and defenses of master’s and PhD thesis in the area of mining and mechanics will also be provided.
The General manager of AD “Elektrani na Makedonija”, Dejan Boshkovski, and the President of the Management Board of the “Premogovnik Velenje” mine, Milan Medved, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of education and training of vocational profiles in Velenje, Slovenia. According to the document, AD ELEM will have the possibility to practically train profiles in the field of mining and technical sciences, applying the methods of underground coal exploitation.
“Premogovnik Velenje” has the knowledge, experience, state-of-the-art equipment and internal know-how and skills applicable in the practice, i.e. a patented method of ore exploitation that is applied on almost all continents. Our experts will have an opportunity during the trainings in the facilities of “Premogovnik Velenje” to learn the most up-to-date methods of underground coal exploitation. The specificity of the method in the controlled and efficient underground excavation through the main chain transporter, which allows for larger production of coal.
The Slovenian President Borut Pahor, as part of his official visit to the Republic of Macedonia, paid a visit to the hydro power plant “Sveta Petka”. Several Slovenian companies took part in the construction of the hydro power plant “Sveta Petka”, with RIKO from Ljulbjana as the lead constructor.
The latest energy facility of AD “Elektrani na Makedonija” is a 75 million Euros investment. It is one of the most complex and specific construction undertakings completed in the Republic of Macedonia. Its installed capacity of 36.4 MW and the annual projected production of about 66 GWh will result in additional domestic production of the environmentally most acceptable electricity for about 40,000 citizens in the Republic of Macedonia.
