In 2015 JSC Elektrani na Makodonija fully realized two capital energy projects with total worth of 92,1 million Euro  and continued preparatory activities for other important projects to be implemented in the future. For the first time, in the Republic of Macedonia a facility was built that uses the wind as the driving force-Wind Park Bogdanci,  and the complex task of rehabilitation of hydropower plants - second phase was completed. The company presents a strong commitment to the implementation of projects for new renewable sources of energy. At the same time, the company undertakes preparatory activities and investigative work on the construction of new coal mines needed to produce electricity and invests in a new heating system for Bitola, Novaci, Logovardi and Mogila.

Coal site Zhivojno
09This project, with a total projected value of 104 million Euro is planned to be realized in the period from 2015 to 2021. The preparation of a major mining project for exploitation of coal from the site Zhivojno is in progress and it is expected to be completed in 2017. The planned annual capacity of the mine "Zhivojno" will be used in addition to the total required quantities of coal for the unhindered operation of three units in TPP Bitola.

After preparation of main mining design  follows the procedure for opening the mine and it is expected full capacity to be achieved after 2020.

Utilization of local coal sites in Berovo (Pancherevo), Delchevo (Zvegor-Stamer) and Resen (Lavci)
Sites "Pancherevo" - Berovo and "Zvegor-Stamer" - Delcevo are on great distance from thermoelectric plants Oslomej and Bitola, however, taking into account the fact that in this part of Macedonia no active thermal power plant exists, we believe it is reasonable to think about building a new TPP Istok.The location of the site "Lavci" - Resen, where the coal has very low sulfur content, is interesting in terms of the relatively short distance for transport to the existing TPP Oslomej and TPP Bitola.

In progress is the initial phase of the detailed geological research in Lavci Zvegor-Stamer and Pancherevo with the preparation of elaborates and their audit. The total amount of 1.650.000,00 Euro is planned to be provided from ithe own financial sources of JSC ELEM.The possibility of using coal from these mines in the existing TPP Bitola and TPP Oslomej, as well as the existing solution for construction of a new thermal power plant will significantly increase the strategic value of these locations.

rsz_elem_22300Wind Park Bogdanci, the first of its kind in Republic of Macedonia, was completed in February 2014th and it uses the wind as source for generating electrical energy. The erecting and construction of the wind turbines on the location Ranavec was finalized as of 20th of February when the most complex part of the 76 day construction officially was concluded. By the end of March 2014th in a coordinated operation of the three power companies, ELEM, MEPSO and EVN – Macedonija, the WPB was connected to the power grid trough the Valandovo substation. With this procedure all preconditions for the test of the entire equipment were fulfilled and the test production of electrical energy started by the beginning of April when the first KWh were delivered to the Macedonian power grid. According to the activity schedule, once the test phase regulated by the manufacturer of the equipment is completed, the new power facility will be in disposal of the Macedonian power system and will start with regular production. The turbines are product of Siemens – Denmark and are considered among the best of their class. The installed capacity of each turbine is 2.3 MW, the height of the pole is 80 meters and the diameter of the rotor blade is 93 meters. WP „Bogdanci” is expected to deliver at least 100 GWh renewable energy, sufficient for households of more than 60.000 people in RM annually. Simultaneously, they will increase the installed capacity for 36,8 MW. This project will increase the rate of the renewable sources in AD ELEM portfolio which presents another indicator for the care towards the environment.


On 31st of July was completed one of the most complicated technical procedures on the existing hydro power capacities owned by JSC „Macedonian Power Plants”. The revitalization of the hydro power plants – second phase was entirely completed and marked a new beginning for the modernized hydro power plant „Vrutok”. The whole project amounted at 36,6 million euros started in February 2013 and will enable longer life expectancy of our big hydro power plants, their additional facilities and also increase the safety and reliability. During the entire process, the worn out hydro-mechanic, mechanic and electrical equipment has been completely replaced. Also, the installed capacity has been increased for additional 18,31 MW and the annual production for additional 50 GWh. During the period from February 2013 until June 2014, all four generators have been revitalized in few stages. The installed capacity of the four generators is increased from 37,5 MW to 41,4 MW or 4 MW per generator.MavrovskiHidrosistem-Sema-PRINT-1600x1000mm_001

The benefits from revitalization of the generators in HPP „Vrutok” are: increased installed capacity of the HPP from 150 MW to 166 MW while maintaining almost the same water consumption per generator, increasing the efficiency and the capability of the system as well as prolonging the life expectancy for the next three decades. Along with the restart of the new four generators, the four generator substations were replaced and started working as well. Also in HPP „Raven”, located near HPP „Vrutok”, three generator substations were replaced with new 9 MVA substations. With respect to the activities concerning the Mavrovo hydro power plants, the procedure for superstructure of the Leunovo dam enabled possibility for utilizing additional 32 million cubic water, or additional 50 GWh electrical energy. The reconstruction of the Reka and Shara channels has been completed, thus minimizing the chances for water loss. Within the both channels, the detected damages have been repaired and the critical locations for potential land slide have been removed, therefore the safety of the channel is improved for the next five decades. With these procedures the local population will be protected from the risks of possible landslides. This project is featured with construction of new rebar reinforced concrete channel on the most damaged route of the intake in total length of 510 meters. Simultaneously, on this one and other two locations drainage was constructed for accepting underground waters in order to prevent landslides. The Toljane tunnel was also restored at the most critical routes. With this procedure the safety of the tunnel was significantly increased, yet the water losses throughout the object have decreased. Within the project additional equipment has been installed, especially in the area of automation of the process of electrical energy production and also installation of equipment for observing the architectural soundness of the dams, the stability and safety of the dams and the featured objects. The grout curtain on HPP „Spilje” dam has been revitalized and the installation of the new monitoring equipment on the dams in „Mavrovo”, „Globochica”, „Spilje”, „Tikvesh”, „Kozjak” and „Sv.Petka” is completed.

JSC „Macedonian Power Plants” during the 2013th continued the investment activities in important projects for improvement and modernization of existing facilities and construction of new facilities. The total amount of investments, both for completed and newly started projects, is more than 170 million euros. 

Revitalization and modernization of TPP „Bitola”
During the 2013th the boiler system in TE „Bitola 2” was modernized. This 88,5 million euro project features complete replacement of the coal track, the coal intake, the air intake, replacement of the bigger part of the hose system, decreasing of the emissions and many other operations on all three thermo power plants in REK „Bitola”. The entire realization of the project is planned to be finished until October 2015th when AD ELEM, with respect to the NO emissions, will become compatible with the highest European environmental directives.

Wind Park

During May 2013th on the location Ranavec near Bogdanci, a foundation for the Wind Park „Bogdanci” was placed and the construction activities have started. In accordance to the work dynamics, during the 2013th the infrastructure, the secondary objects and part of the wind turbines were erected. JSC „Macedonian Power Plants” for its first such project, set a benchmark of minimum annual production of 100 GWh or approximately 2% from the current production per year. The detailed analyses proved that the size of the wind park will completely justify the use of the available area and the wind resources and that the location Ranavec is the most appropriate for the cause. The turbines are product of Siemens – Denmark and are considered among the best of their class. The installed capacity of each turbine is 2.3 MW, the height of the pole is 80 meters and the diameter of the rotor blade is 93 meters. WP „Bogdanci” is expected to deliver at least 100 GWh renewable energy, sufficient for households of more than 60.000 people in RM annually, or a town the size of Prilep, Kumanovo, Tetovo or Gostivar. Simultaneously, they will increase the installed capacity for 36,8 MW. This project will increase the rate of the renewable sources in AD ELEM portfolio which presents another indicator for the care towards the environment.
In this 55,5 million euros worth project, the loan from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany trough KFW bank amounts 47,9 million euros, whereas 7,6 million euros come from the funds of JSC „Macedonian Power Plants”. In the following period, JSC „Macedonian Power Plants” in cooperation with the Government of the Federal republic of Germany will determinedly continue to develop and promote the renewably  energy and to build eco-friendly production capacities for the benefit of the citizens of Republic of Macedonia.

Revitalization of HPP – second phase

During the third decade of February 2013th the revitalization of the hydro power plants of JSC „Macedonian Power Plants”  – second phase started, featuring change of the old and worn-out hydro-mechanic and, machine and electro equipment. Also, there was an architectural intervention in the hydro-power plants and its additional objects. Within the same project, additional equipment has been installed, especially in the range of automation of the power generating process, as well as installation of additional equipment for observing the architectural soundness  of the dams, the stability and safety of the dams and the featured objects. The 33,6 million euros worth project which was officially completed in July 2014th, enables extended life expectancy of the existing hydro power plants and its featured objects, as well as increasing the safety and the capability, increasing the installed capacity to 18,31 MW and additional production of approximately 50 GWh electric power annually.

Coal pit Zivojno

AD ELEM invested 3,5 million euros for additional geological and geotechnical  researches of the coal pit Zivojno. The research ended in March 2013 and along with making elaborates for mine reserves and their revision, the process for finalization of researching Zivojno as new coal mine necessary for extending the life expectancy of REK „Bitola” was enclosed. It is estimated that JSC „Macedonian Power Plants”  will invest 103,5 million euros in this mine and the realization would start upon finishing the main mine project.

Expanding the network of ELEM Energetika
As of 1st of January 2013, JSC „Macedonian Power Plants” through its subsidiary „Energetika” started to distribute heat energy for the customers in the entire settlement of Avtokomanda in Skopje. In order to provide this service, during the last year the company set the 2 kilometers main pipeline in Avtokomanda. This investment is valued at 1,7 million euros and it was conducted in cooperation with the Municipality of Skopje upon a request from the inhabitants and the local self-government. This investment made it possible for additional 1.854 households in 70 objects, as well as kindergartens, schools, athletic facilities and business centers to connect to ELEM Energetika heating network.

JSC “Macedonian Power Plants” continues its investment activities for the improvement and modernization of existing facilities and simultaneously, prepares for the construction of new facilities for electricity generation. In 2009 we started the largest investment cycle  since the company’s inception, 37 million Euros, with a further growth of 50 million Euros in the following year. The trend continued in 2011 with approximately 61 million Euros and it culminated in 2012 with an investment of almost 100 million Euros.


Surface mine „Deep Underlying Seam Suvodol“
The area of the deposit is situated in the exploitation field of mine Suvodol and its spread over approximately 3 km2 or 1/3 of the entire area affected by the main coal seam (10 km2). The deep underlying complex is under the main productive seamof the deposit and there are 1-18  seams of coal. The average thickness of coal seams in the Deep Underlying seam is 14,97 m. Analysis and interpretation of the carried out research for examination of the DUS emphasizes it, as the most economically interesting of the two underlying seams of coal: I – underlying seam and II-underlying seam main seam of DUS respectfully.09

During 2004, detailed geological and geotechnical research was  conducted  and technical documentation was prepared where all necessary parameters were obtained for geological construction, as well as engineering – geological and geo-mechanical characteristics. The research determined geological reserves of up to 55.000.000 tons of coal where exploitation reserves are 50.000.000 tones with overburden coefficient of 1:4,7 (m3/t).

The exploitation technology of the „Deep Underlying Seam“consists of continuous ETS systems with the utilization of newly supplied equipment for Surface Mine “Suvodol”and the supply of additional new equipment. Transport of coal excavated from DUS shall be executed  by the current conveyor belt  system used in the mine of Suvodol.

During 2012, the construction of drainage wells for SM “Deep Underlying Seam” were completed whereby accomplishing a very important moment process which will aid the future excavation and exploitation operations at the mine.

Coal deposit “Mariovo”
JSC “Macedonian Power Plants” – Skopje continuously and systematically takes appropriate measures for activities for additional exploration of potential deposits for coal exploitation within its development policy in order to timely accommodate for the  exploitation of coal reserves. During 2009 and 2010, AD ELEM carried out additional research and preparation of technical documentation (elaborates) for the coal deposit “Mariovo”.

The prepared elaborates have characteristics of collective elaborates respectively, taking into account the research date of previously conducted processes while aiming to investigate and produce new updated information. The commissioning of the coal mine with underground excavation at “Mariovo” would also have a positive influence on the factors of economic passiveness and emigration that have been present in the area in previous years.

The man mining design for the mine with underground excavation in Mariovo was conducted by the Slovenian company, Premogovnik Velenje along with a study for environmental impact.


Revitalization and modernization of TPP “Bitola”
The Power Plant has been in operation for 20 years. The three units in TPP Bitola started with operation in 1982, 1984 and 1988 respectively. Each unit has a capacity of 225 MWe land consumes about 2 million tons of coal annually.

Revitalization and modernization of the turbines, generators and automation in TPP Bitola;
Revitalization and modernization of the boilers and decreasing of the  NOx  in TPP “Bitola”as well as  modernization of the cooling towers;
Revitalization and modernization of TPP ”Bitola” with decreasing of  SОx and dust.

The Modernization and revitalization of the turbines, generators and the automation in TPP “Bitola” shall extend operational lifetime of TPP “Bitola” for 120.000 hours, the flowing part of the boilers shall be modernized, turbines and protection systems shall be regulated and modernized, parts of the generator shall be modernized, dynamic diagnostic monitoring of the unit shall be modernized, technological processes in TPP shall be automated, the coefficient of utilization shall be increased,  and the power capacity shall be increased for additional 8,32 MW per unit or 24,96 MW for TPP.

Modernization and Revitalization of the boilers and reducing of NOx  in TPP “Bitola” as well as the modernization of the cooling towers
Revitalization of boilers is expected to:

  • Increase the CU (coefficient of utilization) of boilers, i.e. providing production of 700 t/h super heated steam(5450C, 140bar), with decreased and variable coal quality;
  • Examination, determining of existing condition of heating areas, replacing the same in accordance with examination results, and at the same time, extending their life time for 120.000 hours;
  • Examination and modification of the system for preparation of coal dust, aero mixture, as well as combustion system in order to provide reduction of NOx during work with coal with variable and lower quality. After this has been accomplished  NOx emissions   should not be higher than 200mg/Nm3 (in accordance with  Directive 2001/80/EC)

The Contract for modernization of boilers and reducing of NOx for the three units, which has been signed with Babkok Borsig on 16.12.2011, is in the ongoing  phase. The Modernization of the boiler and reducing of NOx of unit 3 has been finished in 2012.

Modernization and Revitalization of TPP Bitola with reducing of SОx and dust particles
The last, third phase from the Modernization and revitalization of TP Bitola is in its initial stage. Therefore, a Feasibility study by Yokogawa Electric Corporation has been prepared. The Feasibility study was initiated in September 2011, and the final version of the study will be submitted to JSC ELEM in April 2012.
